ODTÜ-GÜNAM Joins NEXUS Project Consortium

We are thrilled to announce that ODTÜ-GÜNAM, a leading Turkish research institute, is now a proud member of the NEXUS project consortium. ODTÜ-GÜNAM and the projects twelve other technological and R&I institutes and industry partners are set to collaborate and lead the project to new findings.

NEXUS is known for its ambitious goals in the field of renewable energy, with a main objective to develop tandem perovskite photovoltaic (PV) solar cells based on eco-design principles, focusing on efficiency, cost-effectiveness, sustainability, circularity, and social responsibility. We’re committed to using abundant materials throughout the value chain to maximize PV energy yield per area.

The heart of NEXUS innovation lies in our tandem solar cells, featuring a silicon (Si) bottom structure and perovskite (PVSK) top cell. These cells are projected to reach an impressive efficiency of 33% by the end of our project, ensuring a sustainable, competitive EU PV production. But what truly sets NEXUS apart is our commitment to reducing the use of expensive and scarce materials, such as silver (Ag) and indium (In), in the development of high-efficiency PV solar cells. This is where ODTÜ-GÜNAM’s expertise and ambition come into play.

ODTÜ-GÜNAM will push the boundaries by providing Si bottom structures with zero silver usage, thanks to a cutting-edge hybrid PERC/TOPCon technology. This alternative structure will go beyond NEXUS’s original goals by significantly reducing silver consumption in silicon/perovskite tandem devices.

Additionally, ODTÜ-GÜNAM’s outdoor testing facility will play an important role in testing the durability of NEXUS tandem cells in the dry, continental climate of Ankara.

Stay tuned for more updates on this groundbreaking collaboration as we work together to make the world a greener place.
